FLOOR ACTION:

SF 197 – Allowing certain vans and pickups as school buses

SF 197 allows pickups designed to carry nine passengers or fewer, including the driver, to be used as school buses. The vehicle must have safety belts or safety harnesses, and the driver must comply with all qualifications, licenses and instructions as other drivers, but is not required to obtain a commercial driver’s license (CDL). If the pickup has towing capacity, students cannot be transported when the vehicle is being used to tow.

SF 303 – Replacement drivers’ license

SF 303 – Iowans under 21 carry a vertical driver’s license. Upon attaining 21 years of age, they are not required to get a new horizontal license until it’s due for a renewal. The bill makes the person eligible to apply electronically for a replacement horizontal license for the unexpired months. The Iowa Department of Transportation will notify the individual prior to their 21st birthday of their eligibility for the replacement license.

SF 436 – Wrecked or salvage vehicles

SF 436 increases the threshold to 70 percent of the fair market value for a vehicle to be considered wrecked or salvage. Currently, a wrecked or salvage vehicle is a damaged vehicle when the cost of repair exceeds 50 percent of the fair market value before it became damaged.
