COMMITTEE ACTION:
SF 389 – Vehicles in left lane
SF 389 prohibits a vehicle from operating
in the left-most lane when the driver knows that another vehicle is overtaking
them from the rear. Exceptions are given to emergency or road maintenance
vehicles and to all vehicles when traffic conditions, weather, obstructions or
hazards make it necessary to operate in the left-most lane. The bill applies to
operating motor vehicles on roads with two or more lanes traveling in one
direction. A violation is punishable by a $100 fine.

SF 2009 – Special Minor’s Permit
SF 2009 allows a person
issued a special minor’s permit who attends a public school to drive 50 miles
from the point of origin to the destination. Licensees who attend a nonpublic
school currently operate under a similar 50-mile restriction. The bill strikes a
provision that the school activity must be in a school district contiguous to
where the student is enrolled.

SSB 3001 – License exemptions for agriculture
SSB 3001 – Current law
exempts those driving farm tractors and implements of husbandry to nearby or
adjacent farmland from driver’s license requirements. The bill strikes the “nearby
or adjacent” requirement from Iowa Code.
